Grand Theatre Audition Notice
Somewhere
The Grand Theatre operates on the traditional lands and territories of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapewak. We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work and tell stories together.
OUR COMMITMENT
At the Grand we are committed to creating and practicing a company culture that ensures an accessible, equitable, inclusive, and welcoming space for artists, audiences, donors, board members, and staff. We actively encourage submissions from artists who self-identify as being part of underserved communities. It is our mission to reflect the diversity of our community on and off our stages. If you can imagine yourself in the role, then so can we!
Access and inclusion are important to us. If you have any questions regarding the Grand’s accessibility policies and initiatives, or any requests, we encourage you to reach out to Vanessa Spence, Associate Producer & Company Manager, at vspence [at] grandtheatre.com (vspence[at]grandtheatre[dot]com).
THE PROJECT
Somewhere
by Matthew López
Directed by Carmen Aguirre
Choreographed by Genny Sermonia
It’s 1959 and West Side Story is all that anyone can talk about. Inez Candelaria works as an usher on Broadway but hopes that her talented and dance-obsessed children will find fame on the other side of the footlights. Meanwhile, the family nervously counts the days until a neighborhood-wide eviction abruptly threatens everything they have worked for.
From Tony Award-winner playwright, Matthew López (The Inheritance, Some Like It Hot), the Los Angeles Times praises Somewhere as “ebullient, charming — a sprawling family drama and a coming-of-age story.” From the kitchen of their San Juan Hill apartment to stunning Jerome Robbins-inspired choreography on the streets of Manhattan, this talented and determined Puerto Rican family leans into the pure joy of dance and refuses to give up on their dreams.

AUDITION DATES
Auditions will happen in Toronto, ON, between June 1 & 2.
Due to the nature of this show, these auditions will have a dance call. The dance call will be held on June 2. This is a key part of the audition process, helping us see movement ability, energy, and how performers pick up choreography. Anyone invited must make every effort to find availability during the day to attend.
AVAILABLE ROLES
As written in the play, the Candelaria family are Puerto Ricans living in New York. With that, we are seeking self-identifying Latinx actors to submit for the roles of the Candelaria family.
INEZ CANDELARIA (she/her) - Age range: 50’s; Ethnicity: Latinx.
A dynamic, charismatic, fierce and ambitious Puerto Rican mother who believes everything is within reach if you just work hard and never give up dreaming. She believes in the American Dream but worships at the altar of Broadway’s Musical Theater. Wife to a circuit dance and show man, she prioritizes dance, music and acting lessons over food and rent. Must have a strong dance background. Some singing required.
ALEJANDRO CANDELARIA (he/him) - Age range: 20s; Ethnicity: Latinx.
Inez’s eldest son. Oldest sibling and de facto caretaker of the family, including his mother. Responsible, practical and centered person. He also was a professional dancer as a child and deep inside he longs to escape from the overwhelming and at times stifling responsibility for his family. He is frustrated by the real life circumstances that haven’t allowed him the opportunity to break free and pursue his dreams. Must have a strong dance background (ex. modern jazz, ballet).
FRANCISCO CANDELARIA (he/him) - Age: 17 y/o; played by adult. Ethnicity: Latinx.
Inez’ younger son. Younger brother and wise guy. Unlike his two siblings, he is not a dancer, but makes up for it with his enthusiasm and personality. He harbors ambitions of being the next Puerto Rican Marlon Brando.
REBECCA CANDELARIA (she/her) - Age: 16 y/o; played by an adult. Ethnicity: Latinx.
Inez’s daughter. A little Inez in the making. Loves to dream more than rehearse but has real talent. Sweet, unfocused, and starry eyed. Grows up a lot in a year. Must have a strong dance background. Some singing required.
JAMIE (he/him) - Age range: 20s - 30s; Ethnicity: White.
A young man Inez has raised. Ambitious and charismatic man who has made it into the inner circle of Broadway as Jerome Robbins assistant. He is the family’s shining example that success is within reach. Jamie can dance well and holds access into casting choices for musicals. Talented, hardworking but learned from Inez how to work the system. Has been absent from the family on his climb to success. Rival to Alejandro. Must have a strong dance background.
