2021 High School Project – Outdoors

HIGH SCHOOL PROJECT – OUTDOORS
"THE GREAT GRAND ROAD TRIP"

The Grand Theatre’s High School Project is back for 2021 in its most creative, collaborative, and imaginative edition yet! And this year, the High School Project is going OUTSIDE! The only program of its kind in North America, the High School Project (HSP) offers an exceptional opportunity for students to receive education and training with professional theatre mentors.

This safe, flexible, hybrid model that can easily pivot at a moment’s notice according to current public health restrictions will combine outdoors and virtual programming. Theatre-loving high school students will come together to build a community for three weeks through the collective creation of a summer theatrical treat!

The final product will be THE GREAT GRAND ROAD TRIP, our love letter to London, Ontario in the summertime. We’ll be outdoors exploring some of London’s favourite landmarks with curiosity, and imagining the possibilities for theatrical magic. We’ll be rethinking some of your favourite musical numbers in new, exciting ways—and outdoors! Think of it as the biggest, sprawling summer musical revue ever.

Starting with research of London heritage and using the city as our canvas to safely explore and create dramatic moments, students will learn the building blocks of devising by creating a filmed 20 minute piece of theatre that combines music, dance, spoken word, and performance — and we’ll be throwing in some of your favourite musical numbers too!

So, grab your flipflops, sunglasses, and beach umbrella for this delightful video postcard, destined to be the perfect summer treat dressed up in perfect Grand style!

Andrew Tribe

Under the leadership of Andrew Tribe (HSP “Titanic” 2019, HSP ‘Comfort & Joy’ segment 2020), High School Project 2021 will take place August 9 - 27 from Monday to Friday at 9am - 5pm.

No experience necessary—just a love for theatre!
Admittance is by submission.

Now, you might have some questions… Here we have some answers…

How is the High School Project being delivered this year?
High school students will come together for 3 weeks of learning and creativity that will empower our students with confidence, creative thinking, team work, and performance skills. We are excited to welcome students interested in Performance, Production, and Video/Film.

Our flexible model will allow us to pivot and produce a rich and fulfilling experience, capped with a final performance. We are excited by the opportunity for young people to grow a network of likeminded theatre enthusiasts, receive mentorship from professional theatre artists, and get back to what we love to do!

Since the program takes place out and around London, students will need to provide transportation to and from filming locations throughout London which could vary from day to day.

Is there a cost to the High School Project?
No! Participation in the High School Project is FREE. The program is fully subsidized so that cost is not a barrier to participation.

What is the time commitment?
The High School Project runs August 9 - 27 from Monday to Friday at 9am - 5pm. There is no commitment on the weekends or in the evenings. Week 1 is devising/rehearsing, Week 2 and Week 3 will be performance/filming.

A live viewing party may occur on August 27, if COVID restrictions allow, or streamed online.

Because of the collaborative nature of this project, we kindly require all students to be available for the entire scheduled dates and times.

How can I become apart of the High School Project 2021?

APPLICATION PROCESS

Are you/will you be a High school Student in the 2021/2022 school year? Do you love theatre? Do you love collaborating, leaning, and creating? Are you passionate about all aspects of theatre?

Application deadline: Sunday, June 13, 2021 by end of the day.
All Applicants will be informed by Friday, June 18, 2021 regarding their status in the program.

VIDEO SUBMISSION: Submit a 2 minute video as an Unlisted YouTube video link. In this video you have…

  • 1 minute to tell us who you are, what is your favourite pastime or hobby, and why you would love to join us this summer!
  • 1 minute to show us an expression of your creativity. You could sing a song that you love, perform a dance, read a poem, show a skill or a hobby, acrobatics, a magic trick, a painting, a craft, or something you designed, act out a scene or monologue, play an instrument — whatever shows us you at your best!

In an effort to share the enriching qualities of the theatre with a wider cross-section of young people, we are actively seeking a balance of performing and non-performing artists (costumes, props, visual artists, poets, designers, stage managers, and any non-performing discipline we may have missed).

We are especially interested in High School students who love video recording, photography, and creating movies! This is the perfect project for budding young filmmakers to get involved in too.

We are actively seeking submissions from young people of all backgrounds, abilities, and ethnicities as we are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion within our process. We especially encourage applicants who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, Gender Minorities, LGBTQ2S+, d/Deaf, Mad, Disabled/People with Disabilities, and/or Neurodiverse to submit.

What are your COVID-19 health and safety protocols during outdoor filming?

The health, well-being and safety of our performers and staff is our first priority. Our greatest hope is to do as much programming safely in-person, but we can utilize digital formats that still promises a positive, fulfilling experience.

Here are our principles:

COHORTS
Students will be creating in cohorts of 10 (or larger if restrictions allow).

PRE-SCREEN
All participants and staff will be required to complete a pre-screening. Students who don’t feel well or appear to have any symptoms will be kindly asked to stay home.

STAGGERED ARRIVAL
Each cohort will have a specific arrival time to reduce large numbers arriving simultaneously.

A CLEAN MACHINE!
Strict cleaning and sanitizing protocols are being introduced, including frequent cleaning of any high touch surfaces.

LET’S KEEP THOSE HANDS CLEAN!
We’ve carved out plenty of time each day for participants to wash their hands. In addition, hand sanitizer will be available to be used as needed.
